All people self-soothe based on one of their five senses. As children, we were taught how not to feel stress by engaging in some form of self-soothing behavior. Examples of self-soothing behaviors as children: Sense of Sight – Watching your favorite movie or watching a mobile overhead Sense of Hearing – Listening to a lullaby, listening to your favorite music Sense of Taste – Using your pacifier Sense of Touch – Having your security blanket or stuffed animal with you at all times Sense of Smell – The perfume of our caregiver We trained ourselves that one or two of these five senses were the best way to self-soothe. As an adult, you will use that same primary sense in either healthy or unhealthy behaviors. During quarantine, if you have a pet, use your sense of touch and sight. The repetitive nature of petting the animal calms your mind. Pay attention to the texture of the fur and the hair of the animal as it connects with your hands. Your sense of touch will help anchor you to the present moment, as opposed to what may happen in the future. Looking the pet in the eye creates oxytocin for both of you. Oxytocin is a feel-good hormone that allows us to feel calm and relaxed. The more often you do this when you are stressed the more quickly you can relax. http://www.JamesMillerLIFEOLOGY.com https://LIFEOLOGY.tv. . . #quarantine #miniatureschnauzer #relax #selfsoothing #mindfulness #touch #oxytocin #covid19 #love #schnauzersofinstagram #stayhome #minischnauzer #selfcare #coronavirus #socialdistancing #covid_19 #mentalhealth #corona #mentalhealthawareness #life #staysafe #anxiety #positivevibes #loveyourself #selfregulation #dogsofinstagram #Quarantine #happy #JamesMillerLIFEOLOGY® #shelterinplace

All people self-soothe based on one of their five senses. As children, we were taught how not to feel stress by engaging in some form of self-soothing behavior.

Examples of self-soothing behaviors as children:

  • Sense of Sight – Watching your favorite movie or watching a mobile overhead
  • Sense of Hearing – Listening to a lullaby, listening to your favorite music
  • Sense of Taste – Using your pacifier
  • Sense of Touch – Having your security blanket or stuffed animal with you at all times
  • Sense of Smell – The perfume of our caregiver

We trained ourselves that one or two of these five senses were the best way to self-soothe.
