Reducing stigmas | Renee Hodges

Mental health and Substance Abuse addictions often have negative societal stigmas. People understand physical sickness, but don’t often understand or believe that people who don’t suffer from an obvious ailment are faking, or they want attention from others. Logically, who would want to struggle with a mental health or substance abuse disorder? Society dictates what is socially acceptable and what is not. If we have not experienced something we often judge it based on what we would do. Truthfully, if you’ve never experienced it, you don’t have any data to truly know what you would do. Find compassion for those who are struggling. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean that it’s not real or that the person has any less value than you.

Author, Renee Hodges, and her nephew Bobby, review Renee’s book SAVING BOBBY: Heroes and Heroin in One Small Community. This is a real life memoir of Bobby’s uphill battle with opioid addiction and the celebration of his life as his family and community railed around him to help him find his way.
